Smart Glasses & Audio Glasses FAQs — Every Question, Answered

Everything people ask about smart glasses, audio glasses and Sidequest — answered straight. Can't find your question? Ask us or visit us in Melbourne.

The basics

What are smart glasses?
Glasses with technology built into the frame — speakers, microphones and an AI assistant — so you can listen, take calls and get help hands-free. Sidequest makes audio-first smart glasses: all the smarts, no camera.
What are audio glasses or audio sunglasses?
Glasses with small open-ear speakers built into the temples. You hear music, podcasts and calls clearly while your ears stay open to the world — no earbuds needed.
What do Sidequest Pro glasses actually do?
Open-ear audio for music and calls, a hands-free AI assistant, and live translation across 88+ languages — controlled by touch or voice while your phone stays in your pocket.
Do Sidequest smart glasses have a camera?
No — on purpose. No camera means a lighter frame, better battery life, and glasses that are welcome in gyms, offices, schools and anywhere camera glasses aren't.
Do smart glasses need a subscription?
Sidequest glasses don't. Pair them with your phone over Bluetooth and you're set.
How do smart glasses work?
They pair with your phone via Bluetooth. Speakers and microphones sit in the temples, and you control everything with touch gestures on the frame or your voice.

Sound & privacy

Can people around me hear my music?
The directional open-ear speakers aim sound at your ears. At normal volume in a typical environment, the person next to you hears little to nothing.
How does the sound compare to earbuds?
Different by design. Earbuds seal your ears; open-ear audio keeps you aware of traffic, colleagues and conversation. For everyday listening, calls and podcasts, most people stop noticing the difference — and love hearing the world again.
Can I take phone calls on them?
Yes — built-in microphones handle calls hands-free, and callers hear you clearly.
Are they always listening?
No. The microphones are used for your calls and when you activate the assistant. And with no camera, there's nothing pointed at the room.

Battery & tech

How long does the battery last?
Around 7 hours of continuous playback, up to 10 days on standby, and a fast charge takes about 2 hours.
Do they work with iPhone and Android?
Yes — both, over standard Bluetooth.
How does live translation work?
The assistant translates conversations across 88+ languages in near real-time — brilliant for travel, multilingual family, and international work.
Are they water resistant?
Sport models are sweat-resistant and handle workouts and light rain. They're not for swimming or showering.

Lenses & prescription

Can I get prescription lenses in smart glasses?
Yes. Sidequest optical frames can be fitted with your script by our partner optometrists at Eye Philosophy in Williamstown and Doncaster, Melbourne — or by your local optometrist.
Do the sunglasses protect against UV?
Yes — sun lenses are UV400 rated, which matters in Australian sun.
Are there clear-lens options for indoors and office?
Yes — optical models like Mason Optical and Reese Optical wear like everyday glasses.
Can the lenses be swapped later?
In most frames, yes — our partner clinics can advise on lens replacement, tints and prescriptions. Ask at a fitting.

Fit & lifestyle

Are audio glasses safe for cycling?
That's their biggest advantage: unlike earbuds, your ears stay open to traffic, bells and voices. The Pro Apex adds a sport shield and secure wrap fit.
Are they good for running and the gym?
Yes — sweat-resistant sport frames stay put, and you keep situational awareness on shared paths and gym floors.
Can I use them for work and video calls?
Absolutely. Clear-lens frames take your calls and read notifications aloud while you keep typing — no headset hair, no sealed ears.
Can I wear them driving?
Open-ear audio keeps your ears open to sirens, horns and traffic — a key reason drivers choose them over earbuds. Always follow your local road rules.
Are there smart glasses for kids?
Yes — Pro Kids Ollie gives kids audio stories and hands-free fun with ears open and no screens.
Do they look like normal glasses?
Yes — that's the point. From oversized fashion frames to aviators, rimless and sport shields, nobody knows they're smart until you tell them.
How heavy are they?
Comparable to regular quality frames — the sport shield is around 38 g. No camera means no extra weight.
